This is a hardwood carving from the mid to late 1980s (purchased in 1989 in Timika, Papua, Indonesia). It is 102 centimeters (40 inches) in height. For such a long carving, this is very light. The wood color is a dark brown of various shades, partially darkened to black in some areas due to age and smoke.
This is an ancestor statue of three figures. The top two figures are female, while the bottom figure is a male; they are holding two hornbill heads. The indented markings on the heads of the ancestor and the beak of the hornbill are filled in with the white pigmentation often found in Asmat carvings. There are no cracks or holes in this piece; it is in excellent condition.
Price is USD200 for overseas buyers, or 2,800,000 Indonesian Rupiah for buyers living in Indonesia. Reasonable offers will be considered.
