Crocodile Ashtray #2
All the items that are listed here are vintage from the 1980s so they are not in absolute MINT condition. They are second-hand and come with wear commensurate with age. Please refer to the photos for detailed item descriptions.
This is a hardwood (generally called ironwood) figure from the late 1980s (purchased in 1989 in Agats, Papua, Indonesia). It is 47 centimeters (18.5 inches) in length. The wood color is dark brown, almost black. There is a slight chip off the nose; otherwise this carving is in excellent shape. It has been used as an ashtray, and I have many fine memories of some crazy nights back in Papua.
The crocodile is a key figure in Asmat daily life and mythology. The first time that I came across this ashtray, I found it quite amusing that the carver would take such an important figure and make it into an ashtray, obviously for sale to an outsider, either Indonesian or Western. This would make a nice little gift for your favorite smoker. It's relatively light and fits nicely into a suitcase.
Price USD 50 or 700,000 Indonesian Rupiah. Reasonable offers will be considered.
