Ancestor Figure #18

All the items that are listed here are vintage from the 1980s so they are not in absolute MINT condition. They are second-hand and come with wear commensurate with age. Please refer to the photos for detailed item descriptions.

This is a hardwood (generally called ironwood) figure from the late 1980s (purchased in 1989 in Agats, Papua, Indonesia). It is 69 centimeters (27 inches) in height. The wood color is dark brown of various shades, partially darkened due to age and smoke. There is a crack on one arm of the ancestor figure (clearly seen in the photos)and a crack along one of his thighs; other than that the carving is in excellent shape.

This is an ancestor carving with one figure (an ancestor) at the top. Below it are three x-shaped designs. When attempting to figure out what the designs mean, a number of factors come into play: who carved it; in which area was it carved; in what village was it carved; when was it carved. Sometimes a design will mean one thing to a carver in one village, but mean something else to a carver from another village to creates a very similar design. So, this is a long way of saying that I'm not sure what the designs represent.

Price USD 100 or 1,400,000 Indonesian Rupiah. Reasonable offers will be considered.
